Welcome to Region III
The Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic lies on the island of Hispaniola with Haiti as its neighbor. It has followed an interesting history, including Pre-Colombian flourishing of the Arawak/Taino people, its discovery by Christopher Columbus, Spanish rule, Haitian rule, renewed Spanish rule, American rule, and now, sovereignty. Its markets have changed from agricultural (largely sugarcane-based) markets to tourism markets, shaping the majority of the modern changes that the country has been experiencing.

What Region III is known for
Region III is often considered a tropical "hidden gem" in the Dominican Republic. Long home to diverse agricultural industries, such as sugarcane, coconut, and fishing, it has slowly gained more of a tourism presence. One major factor in Region III's tourism growth is the annual migration of humpback whales that call Samaná Bay their home for the winter. As tourism continues to grow, so have local professional interests and industries.
Region III is known for its friendly people. Pictured to the right are my host parents for the summer. From dancing the bachata to eating pescado, arroz con coco, and tostones, they generously shared the Dominican experience with me.
